No. Tangent is friendship-first, and the design holds that line: it never shows faces first and never optimizes for romance. If romance grows naturally between two people who became friends, that's your business — the app never markets it and never nudges it.

UofT students, verified by UofT email before anything else happens, 18 and up at launch. UofT is the first campus; other schools are the plan after that — always students, always verified.

Nothing. Tangent is free, and the core — meeting people, connecting, joining activities — will never sit behind a paywall. No pay-to-win matching, no pay-for-visibility, ever.

September, and launch night is the first window. The exact date gets announced the moment it's set in stone — join the waitlist and you'll hear it first.

Twice a week — Wednesday and Sunday, 9:00 to 9:45 pm — with the queue opening at 8:45. You pick tonight's intent and a lane, text or voice, and you're paired on real overlap — shared interests and the specific things you're into, never photos.

Sessions run ten minutes for text, six for voice, and a good one extends when you both tap extend. Three sessions a night, and no way to buy more.

Nothing bad happens, ever. There are no streaks and no penalties for absence — the next window is only days away. The one thing Tangent does hold you to is other people's time: no-showing on a matched partner who queued up to meet you, or on a table you'd RSVP'd to, is the single class of behavior with consequences.

Your call, fresh each window: text when a roommate's around, voice when typing feels slow. Picking either works too — you take whichever lane fits the person you're paired with. Both lanes are blind, and both run on the same consent rules.

After a session, you each vote in private: reveal, or not. Only a mutual yes unlocks profiles and opens a chat; a no from either side locks the reveal permanently. Votes are never disclosed — from the outside, a no and a vote that simply expired look identical.

Because browsing turns people into a catalog judged by photos. Ten minutes of real conversation tells you more than any thumbnail, so Tangent starts there instead. It also means nobody can collect or screenshot a grid of students — there is no grid.

As little as possible. Calls are never recorded, session messages are deleted on a schedule, and message contents never appear in logs or analytics. The full detail lives in the privacy policy.

Reporting is one tap inside any live session, and it stays available after the session ends. Every report is reviewed by a person. Blocking is instant, permanent, and never announced — and once you block someone, you're never paired with them or seated at the same table again.
