Making friends here shouldn't be this hard.
Tangent exists because of a simple, stubborn observation: tens of thousands of people share this campus, most of them want more friends, and almost nothing is built to help.
The friendship gap
Everyone wants friends. The routes there are broken.
Roughly two-thirds of students report loneliness, and it cuts sharper on a big commuter campus like UofT — about 61,000 people who cross paths all day and scatter home after class.
The existing routes don't fit. Clubs ask for high commitment up front and offer an uncertain social return. Dating apps are mismatched to the need entirely: a reputational cost, looks-first mechanics, and a romantic signal most students have no interest in broadcasting just to find someone to grab lunch with.
So a very large group of people wants friends, has no low-risk way to start, and goes home. That's the gap.

What the research says
Friendship is accumulated time.
The research is unusually clear on this: friendship is built out of shared hours. About 50 of them to make a casual friend, about 200 to make a close one. There's no shortcut — the hours are the friendship.
Most social apps manufacture single exposures: one conversation, one event, then reshuffle. Nobody gets to hour five, let alone hour fifty. Tangent is built around recurrence instead — the same people, the same tables, week after week, until the hours quietly add up.

The line we hold
Not a dating app. Not quietly one, either.
Tangent is never marketed for romance and never optimized for it — not in the mechanics, not in the copy, not in a single design decision. This is a discipline, not a disclaimer: the moment an app starts hinting at romance, the people who just wanted friends stop showing up, and they're exactly the people this is for.
And if romance grows naturally between friends? That's your business. We build the friendships; what you do with them is yours.

Built at UofT, by a UofT student.
Tangent is built at UofT by a third-year student who thinks making friends here shouldn't be this hard. It's student-run and campus-first, and both are on purpose.
One dense campus beats a thin country. So Tangent launches at UofT and gets good at UofT — because meeting people only works when the people you meet actually share your campus.
The rules we build by
Reward participation. Never punish absence.
Those lines come from Tangent's product constitution, and they set the spirit of everything else: we optimize for friendships that stick, never for time in app. No guilt trips, no manufactured urgency, nothing designed to keep you scrolling.
